I picked this up expecting the same atmospheric, boundary-pushing storytelling V. E. Schwab has built her reputation on, and that is exactly what I got, for better and for worse. The biggest story here is the sexual content. At just over ninety-five minutes of filtered audio, it accounts for the bulk of what gets skipped, and the severe tier alone spans more than twenty scenes. Chapter 22 is the first place I would tell you to brace yourself, with seventeen flagged segments clustered together in a way that makes it the densest stretch in the whole book. Then Chapter 26 hits you with a single severe scene that runs nearly six minutes straight, the longest unbroken sequence in the entire audiobook. Violence is the second thing to flag. Nineteen of the thirty-five violence segments land in the severe bucket, so this is not background battlefield noise. It is deliberate, close, and the kind of thing that lingers. The profanity count is real but honestly manageable on its own. The fifteen severe slur segments are a different matter and feel more jarring given the fantasy setting. My honest read: if you are listening solo and you came here for dark, immersive Schwab, you can finish the book with filters running and still get the full narrative. If you are sharing earbuds on a road trip with teenagers, I would keep profanity, violence, and sexual content filters all active. Kids under thirteen, I would steer elsewhere entirely.
