Is A Clash of Kings Clean? Profanity and Content Guide for the Audiobook

Verdict
Heavy

A substantial share of the book gets filtered, and most listeners will choose to skip a meaningful amount.

37h 12m audiobook, 688 filtered segments, 4.4% of the runtime gets skipped at full strength.

A Clash of Kings is the second book in George R. R. Martin's sprawling epic, and I'll be honest with you: I picked this up knowing what I was getting into, and it still landed heavier than I expected. This one earns its Heavy verdict. The profanity is frequent but manageable, spread across 480 segments that mostly skim the mild-to-moderate range. The 29 slur segments are all tagged severe, so if that category matters to you, you'll want that filter on without question. Violence is where Martin really earns his reputation. Eighty-five segments, and the severe ones are not quick. The longest single scene runs over four minutes in Chapter 82, and it is rough. Sexual content is the other big number: 60 segments totaling over an hour of runtime, with 24 of those tagged severe. That is the category most listeners tell me they care about most, and it is the reason I would not hand this to a teenager without the filters running. With profanity, slurs, violence on moderate-and-above, and sexual content fully filtered, you shave off most of that hour and thirty-eight minutes and you still get the same book, same narrator, same story. The war, the betrayal, the political dread, none of that lives in the filtered segments. My honest recommendation: adult listeners who want the full Westeros experience with the worst edges smoothed off will do fine here. Younger listeners or anyone sensitive to violence should either filter aggressively or skip this one entirely and wait for a gentler corner of the genre.
