I picked this up expecting a fantasy epic and got one. I also got roughly fifty-three minutes of content I was glad I could hand off to filters before letting my teenager borrow my earbuds. A Court of Mist and Fury is the second book in Sarah J. Maas's ACOTAR series, and if you've heard anything about it, you already know the romance stops being subtle pretty fast. The six severe sexual content segments alone account for the bulk of that filtered runtime, clustered in ways that make a few chapters feel genuinely different without them. Chapter 18 is the one to know going in: thirty-four tagged segments make it the densest stretch in the book, and I'd call it the real test of whether your filter settings are dialed in before you get there. The violence gets serious too, particularly in Chapter 40, where one scene runs over a minute of severe content involving a character's death that the book handles with real emotional weight. The profanity is frequent but mostly mild, and the fourteen slur segments are all flagged severe, so those get caught cleanly. Here's my honest take: with language, sexual content, and violence filters all running, this is the original, cleaned up, and the story underneath is genuinely great. I'd recommend it for adult listeners who want the full Maas experience without the explicit scenes, or for older teens with those same filters on. If you're sensitive to dark fantasy violence even in filtered form, this one might not be your book. Everyone else can finish it comfortably on a long weekend.
