Jurassic Park is a lot more language-heavy than the movie, and that's the first thing most families should know. Michael Crichton's novel about a theme park of cloned dinosaurs that goes very wrong has 291 tagged moments over fifteen hours, and nearly 230 of them are profanity or blasphemy. Profanity runs to 154 tags, mostly mild, with two severe. Blasphemy is unusually prominent at 74 tags, 59 of them moderate. Together they come to a bit over two and a half minutes, so this is frequent but brief. Violence is where the real time goes: 54 moments totaling about 13 minutes, seven rated severe, with the longest close to a minute. That is the dinosaur attacks, and they are the heart of the thrill. There are four severe slurs and a single severe sexual content tag. The filters remove about 16 minutes overall, under two percent of the book. With Scott Brick narrating, the suspense comes through intact. For a teenager who loved the movies and wants the original, I'd turn on Blasphemy, Profanity, Slur and Violence at the severe level. That covers almost everything that would surprise a parent. For adults bothered mainly by the language, filtering Blasphemy and Profanity alone works well. I'd hold off on readers younger than about twelve, since even with severe violence filtered, the attacks are what the book is about.
