Frank Herbert's Dune is the desert planet, the spice, and Paul Atreides growing into something his enemies didn't see coming, and for a book of its reputation, it's tamer on language than people tend to assume. Profanity has thirty-nine moments, almost entirely mild, with nothing severe. Where the filtering actually lands is violence: seventy-three moments adding up to about seventeen minutes, most of it moderate, four severe. That's knife fights, battles, and a coup, which is to say the plot. Of the roughly twenty-one minutes filtered across a twenty-one-hour full-cast production, violence is most of it. The things I'd flag for parents are smaller. There are twelve severe slurs, a handful of them ethnic or anti-gay terms, plus one severe hate speech moment. There are five sexual content moments, two of them severe, and ten mentions of substance use, which makes sense in a story where the spice is a drug. For a teenager ready for serious science fiction, I'd turn on slurs, hate speech, and sexual content at every level and leave violence at your own comfort level, since the fights carry the story. That combination costs only a couple of minutes. If your teen is younger or sensitive, add severe violence too. With those filters, Dune is a fine first step into adult science fiction for a thoughtful fourteen-year-old.
