Eragon is a farm boy finding a dragon egg, and that premise has pulled a lot of young readers into fantasy. If you're a parent wondering whether it's okay for a ten-year-old, the short answer is yes, with one category to think about. Of ninety-one tagged moments, seventy-one are violence, and they account for almost all of the roughly seventeen minutes filtered out of a sixteen-hour book. Most of that is moderate, with five severe, the longest about eighteen seconds. Some of the busiest stretches come near the end, where the story builds to a large battle. Everything else is light. There are thirteen profanity moments, none severe, and the words are mostly insults. There are three severe slurs, two religious exclamations, one of them severe, and a single crude humor moment and a single mention of drinking. No sexual content. That profile makes this one of the easier fantasy books to hand to a younger kid. For an eight- to ten-year-old, I'd turn on severe and moderate violence, slurs, and blasphemy, which takes out more time but softens the battles noticeably. For eleven and up, I'd filter the slurs and severe violence and leave the rest. Either way, the dragon, the journey, and the story come through, and your kid gets to finish the book and probably ask for the next one.
