Is Empire of Silence Clean? Profanity and Content Guide for the Audiobook

I picked up Empire of Silence expecting a slow-burn space opera in the vein of classic science fiction, and what I got was closer to a Roman epic filtered through gothic cathedral light. Christopher Ruocchio is doing something genuinely ambitious here, and the audiobook is worth your time. That said, this one earns its Moderate verdict honestly.

The violence is the main thing to know about. There are 114 tagged segments, and most of them are not quick flashes. Chapter 76 is the chapter I'd flag before you hand this to anyone who bruises easily. It carries 24 segments on its own, and the longest severe scene runs about fifteen seconds of audiobook runtime. That doesn't sound like much until you're in it. The execution sequences and gladiatorial content are written with real weight, which is Ruocchio's whole point, but that also means the filtering in those stretches is doing actual work.

Profanity is present but scattered across a 26-hour runtime, so it never felt like it defined the book for me. The sexual content is mostly mild and brief, fourteen of the fifteen tagged segments sit in that mild tier. You'll lose a little under 42 minutes total with filters running, which across 26 hours you honestly won't notice. It's the same book, same narrator, same story.

My honest recommendation: if you're a fan of dense literary sci-fi and want to share it with a teenager who can handle filtered war content, turn violence to moderate and you're largely covered. If you want something cleaner than that, this one's probably not your first pick.
