Anthony Doerr's novel about a blind French girl and a German orphan whose paths cross during the Second World War won the Pulitzer and has stayed popular for good reason. It's also a war novel, and a long one, so here's what's in it. Our reviewers tagged 73 moments across about sixteen hours, and the total skipped time comes to roughly five and a half minutes, so the verdict is Light. Violence takes up the most time, twelve moments and about two and a half minutes, mostly moderate, with two severe scenes, the longest just under thirty seconds. Language is more frequent but brief: 34 profanity tags, four of them severe, and eleven blasphemy tags, mostly moderate uses of Jesus's name. The thing I'd flag is slurs. There are eight, and seven are severe, which fits the setting but is worth knowing. There's one mild sexual content moment that runs over a minute and a half, plus some crude humor. My recommendation for a mature teen: turn on slurs and severe profanity at every level, and severe violence. For an adult who just wants the hardest edges off, slurs and severe language is enough. You'll get the same book, same narrator, same story, and you won't lose any of what makes it beautiful.
