Is Shadows Upon Time Clean? Profanity and Content Guide for the Audiobook

I picked this up because Ruocchio's Sun Eater series has been sitting in my library for months, and a 44-hour epic felt like the right road trip companion. Short answer: it's a heavy lift to clean, but it's not a reason to abandon the series. The violence is the real story here. Nearly 200 segments, with a full 45 minutes of it sitting in the moderate-to-severe range, and Chapter 77 alone has the longest single severe scene in the book at a minute and a half. Chapter 36 is the other one to flag. It clusters 28 tagged segments in one stretch, which tells me something narratively significant is happening there, and you will feel it if you are listening unfiltered. The sexual content surprised me more than the profanity did. Thirteen severe segments adding up to over 14 minutes means you are not dealing with implications and fade-to-blacks. Those scenes are in the room with you. The slur count also skews severe (17 of 22 segments), which matters if you are listening with teenagers who will notice. On the profanity side, the mild end carries most of the weight, so that category alone would not have made me quit. My recommendation: if you want to finish the book with the family, run Violence, Sexual Content, and Slurs all set to filter severe and moderate. You will lose about 55 minutes of a 44-hour experience. That is the original, cleaned up. If you are a solo listener who just wants the harshest edges off, filter severe-only across every category and call it done.
