Golden Son is the second book in Pierce Brown's Red Rising trilogy, and if you picked up Red Rising thinking it was rough around the edges, I want to be straight with you: this one turns the dial up. I picked this up expecting more of the same political brutality and gladiator-style combat, and I got it, plus a sexual content load I wasn't fully prepared for. The headline number is 45 minutes filtered across a 19-hour book, which sounds manageable until you realize the violence alone accounts to nearly 25 minutes, with 14 severe segments spread across the back half. Chapter 15 is the single busiest chapter in the book, 34 tagged segments, and it earns that distinction. There's also a scene in Chapter 46 that runs over three minutes of severe content, and it hits without much warning if you're listening on a long drive with kids in the back seat.
Here's the honest read. The crude humor is all mild, the blasphemy barely registers, and the profanity, even with three severe hits, is mostly the moderate-and-under variety you'd hear in any R-rated film. The slur count matters more than the raw number suggests, eleven of twelve segments land at severe, so if that category is a dealbreaker for your household, keep that filter on without question.
My recommendation: this book is a great fit for adult listeners who want the same book, same narrator, same story with the rougher edges smoothed out. Turn on violence, sexual content, and slur filters at minimum. Teens who handled Red Rising fine can probably finish the book here with those same settings in place.
