How to Find Clean Audiobooks for Teens

Danny Ellis 2 min read

“Clean” means something different in every family. One parent is fine with a fantasy battle and not with a single f-word. Another is the opposite. So instead of a list someone else decided was clean, here is how to judge a book yourself, with real numbers from books teens actually read.

Look at the counts, not a label

Every content guide we publish counts the moments a person on our team tagged in the book, by category and severity. Here are some popular teen reads from those guides:

Book Total moments What most of it is
A Wrinkle in Time 11 5 blasphemy, 4 violence, 2 profanity
Piranesi 36 17 violence, 13 profanity
Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets 69 46 violence
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone 70 38 violence, 19 profanity
Eragon 91 71 violence, 13 profanity
Catching Fire 93 58 violence, 18 sexual content, 13 substance use
Fourth Wing 515 274 profanity, 111 sexual content, 105 violence
Red Rising 562 370 profanity, 116 violence

Two books with similar totals can be very different. Eragon’s moments are almost all battle scenes. Catching Fire’s include sexual content and substance use. That’s why the category breakdown matters more than the total.

Check severity, too

A count doesn’t tell you how strong something is. Each guide breaks every category into mild, moderate and severe, and points out the chapter with the most. A book with forty mild moments of violence can be easier for a younger teen than one with five severe ones.

Or filter the parts you don’t want

You don’t have to rule a book out. With AudioHaven you choose which categories to skip and at what level, and the app skips those moments while your teen listens. Same book, same narrator.

For families:

  • The Family plan has 5 accounts, each with its own filters and listening history.
  • Child accounts only show books a parent approves, and the parent sets filters the child can’t change.

A simple way to decide

  1. Look up the book’s guide.
  2. Check the two or three categories your family cares about most.
  3. If the numbers are low, let them listen. If not, either pick another book or turn on filters for those categories.

AudioHaven has more than 320 modern audiobooks with filters ready, and a 14-day free trial on both Premium and Family.

Listen without the worry

AudioHaven skips the language, violence, and explicit scenes you choose. Same book, same narrator, same story.
